The absolutely cheapest you will find a type 4 engine in operating condition is in an 1975-1979 bus or earlier 411/412...buy the whole car for $300-$600, take the motor and sell the rest. You won't necessarily get a 2.0 hydraulic, but an oil-puffing 1.7 would still move the van pretty well, if lowest cost is your only concern. (If you bought a 411/412, snitch the BN-4 heater as well). More recommendable...without a core, a decent 2.0 hydraulic should run about $1,200 used (no warrantee) and up to about $3,000 remanufactured. The oil cooler is an add-on. Highly-recommended if you drive fast or haul stuff in the heat. Use as an augmentation to the stock oil cooler, NEVER as a replacement. Better used with an oil thermostat, and better placed at the front of the Vanagon, (behind the grill), with copper plumbing to and from. G. Plus Oil Cooler question << File: ATT00004.htm >> Howdy: Saw this ad recently: "1981 CAMPER Excellent cond. except motor (needs one). $1800." Could anybody tell me a ballpark figure for a 81 air-cooled engine? Also, a 83 Westy I looked at over the weekend had a oil cooler situated on the outside of the bus (drivers side, near engine). Anyone know if this was standard to early 80's Vanagons, or an additional oil cooler (Muir suggests a similar operation)? Thanks. Jon
