I own a '80 vanagon camper. I installed a neon stick shift knob. Today i don't have it on there b/c somewhere along the line it caught fire and i had to almost jump out of it while it was in netural and still rolling. My dad and I spent about a hour and half, trying to figure out why the headlights weren't going off. Well it seems as if i had attached the neon knob power cable to an one exposed end of the headlight wiring harness. The fire tore through the wire and up all the way from the stick shift to the switch on the dash. My friend and i laughed alot. ANyways we found out that it had welded half the wiring to a side wall of the dash. Wires were exposed all over the place. We split the wires and after that icky task we found that every wire caseing had burnt off in several places. So we split them more and wrapped each one with black electrical tape. It was fun. The only problem now is that the EGR light won't go off and the battery light won't go on when i start it like it always did. The EGR light wasn't on before and the battery light worked before. All in all it was an educating experience. You should try it. I also found a splitter wire at the base of the headlight switch that when an accesory is pluged into it, it only turns on when the headlights are turned on. So something that shows in the dark only, like a light or something could be pluged in and always turned off with your headlights. neato. o tay bye bye. i'll write back later, with another installment of the Vanagon Fire Chronicals.
