Are you following the proper procedure for checking the fluid level?

You only check the level with the van running and with the transmission
up to operating temperature(after driving about six miles). If you are
checking it with the van off and cold I suggest not driving the van
anymore until you drain some fluid or you do risk tranny damage.

Besides, since he just bought the van it wouldn't be a bad idea to
replace the fluid and the filter screen.
