Ummm...  John?  The VR-6 is not a four banger.  It's a narrow-angle V-6 engine.
Are you perhaps thinking of the 16V four that was available in earlier Passats?

BTW, if you're thinking of engine conversions, look at www.copartfinder.com.
There's a few Quantums and Rabbit GTi's around the country, resting in wrecking
yards, that may have good engines in 'em yet.  These may be good candidates for
your swap.
