I have a '91 Passat with a 2.0l 16 valve engine with 100k miles on it for
$800 (or $700 if you want to come and get it yourself) complete.  This motor
was running excellent in my sister-in-laws Passat until it fell in love with
a telephone poll (only get one kiss in that relationship :).  Sister in law
is fine but car is a parter.  She replaced it with a nicer '92 Passat 16
valve (the dream lives on).

So if you have been dreaming about this swap, here is your wake up call.
