A VDO head temp gauge works well.  Haven't bought one for years but should be
available from any aircooled supplier.  comes with a sender that attaches to
a head nut.  worked well for me on type 1s  (ps.  I replied directly with
this to the previous sender w/o realizing it didn't go to the list.)
