I was also surprised when I first learned that 'Jap' was a racial slur.  I
think it's historical, in that it was often preceded by 'dirty' or
'scheming' during W.W.II.  I haven't used it since my best friend (of
japanese ancestry) gently pointed out my faux-pas.
