Per I was reading a book in the summer about a guy who in 1910 drove a Humber from England to Spain. Apparently at that time France like England drove on the Left hand side of the road, a near accident took place in the Alps where unknown to the driver the road priority changed from left to right. Switzerland at the time drove on the right hand side of the road. Needless to say a few brusque verbal exchanges took place! This is a very interesting link to have found, as I have always understood it to be from horsemanship and the hand in which you held the horse reins and your whip. i.e. in England we have always favoured the reins in the left and whip in the right, and therefore sat on the right of the right of the carriage.
