My Vanagon has been running OK for a while. Then I got a loud whirring in the rear followed by a loud thumping that shook the engine. The mechanic says that the final drive leaked and is failed so the transaxle should be replaced. Does this sound about right? Can the final drive be repaired? Should I do the whole thing anyway at 180,000 miles? Where can one get a good deal on a transaxle? Automatic - 1.9 - 1985 - Air. LYCOShop is now open.
